If you’re an Uber or Lyft driver in Florida (and most states), be warned that neither your personal auto policy nor the Uber/Lyft insurance will cover you completely in an accident. There are three legal periods while driving Uber…
- Period 1 is app on. Available. Personal auto will not cover this and neither does Uber nor Lift.
- Period 2 is en route. Uber covers liability. No med pay, no collision. Personal Auto insurance doesn’t cover this.
- Period 3 is on trip. Uber covers liability. No med pay, no collision. Personal Auto insurance doesn’t cover this.
This coverage gap is significant. Between you turning on the app and being matched to a ride, you have NO coverage. That’s ANY TIME the app is ON. Moreover their coverage while you are on the job, is very poor, and is focused on protecting passengers and 3rd parties, not drivers and their vehicles. Also, insurance carriers DO now verify with Uber and Lyft to efficiently identify drivers, so please don’t let yourself be caught uncovered when you have an accident.
Many insurance carriers now offer endorsements to your personal auto policy to cover this gap. It is cheap and well worth it. I would argue it’s some of the most cost effective coverage out there, given the risks involved.
