According to the National Safety Council automobile accidents took an unexpected uptick this year in Florida, and across the US. Consequently, most insurance companies have taken steps to raise premiums as a result. Most in the industry blame growing distractions as the primary cause, and while I single out Pokémon in the title, the reality is that there is no shortage of apps and mobile games that are designed to addictively draw your attention, and your eyeballs, away from the road. As a result many apps, Pokémon included, have taken the step to limit functionality while driving, or have you confirm you are a passenger.
Other apps, which are designed to be run while driving, were also found to contribute to accidents. In general, our driving experience is becoming gradually more active, and so many apps and phone operating systems have implemented voice commands to allow you to interact with them safely while driving. On Android, for example, a simple “OK Google. Message my wife. I’ll be home in ten minutes. Send.” will send a message automatically. A comprehensive list of voice commands can be found here.
